Marine Conservation Society's annual count of rubbish records a 90 per cent increase in cigarette lighters and packets, 75 beverage bottles per every thousand yards of beach and growing litter volumes, almost two-thirds of it plastic.
The conservation charity warned the findings showed decades of anti-litter campaigning needed to be reinvigorated for a new generation. Only in north west UK did litter decrease -- by 60 per cent.

Starting to impose fines for littering in Rio  (May 1, 2013)
Considered one of the ten dirtiest tourism hot spots in the world, according to a Trip Advisor survey, Rio de Janeiro will begin to issue fines for those caught littering public spaces in July.  Dropping an empty soda can on the busy streets of Copacabana could earn you a pricey R$157 fine this year in a plan emphasizing awareness and oversight.
